Skipper? Come hear about your options for advancement.

Do you have a sailing license 30, have sailed a yacht a few times, and feel a bit exhausted? Come hear about additional options for enjoying your yacht (and life in general) that you can achieve by upgrading your sailing certificate.

As you already know, your sailing certificate allows you to operate motor yachts powered by engines or sails, up to 24 meters in length and weighing up to 100 tons, and of course, only within the borders of your country. Sailing schools in the country today offer advanced courses that will enable you to progress and enjoy sailing your yacht even more. We will present two excellent options on how you can do this and what each option requires and offers.

What do you need to work as skippers on a yacht?

If you want to work as skippers on a yacht, a skipper certificate alone will not suffice. To work as skippers on a yacht you will need the following:

– Pass the GMDSS exam.

– Two years of experience since obtaining your sailing license.

– One year of work in the sailing field.

– A first aid course for sailors.

– A sea survival and firefighting course.

What does a sailing license 40 provide?

It certifies you to operate a passenger ship for hire, with up to 55 passengers for coastal sailing. Additionally, if you possess a sailing license 60, you can operate up to 12 people for hire on international voyages in addition to the safety crew.

If you want to sail a yacht beyond the borders of Israel, whether for traveling with family or friends or for work purposes (then you will also need a sailing license 40), you must obtain a sailing license 60.

To obtain this license, you must meet the following criteria:

– Hold a sailing license 30 for at least one year.

– Be aged 19 and above.

– Hold a radio operator’s certificate.

– Hold a first aid and resuscitation certificate.

– Have a certification of accumulating 8 days of international sailing.

What does a sailing license 60 provide?

It grants permission to operate a yacht beyond the borders of Israel.

What types of jobs are available for skippers?

Many of the jobs on yachts suitable for skippers are for people who like to instruct, such as: theoretical yacht instructor, practical yacht instructor, or even guiding yacht trips as skippers (more suitable for independents). There are other professions that suit more technically inclined individuals such as: deputy skipper, professional skipper on a private yacht (usually abroad), crew member on a mega yacht (a yacht sized between 40 to 70 meters) or as a technical operational crew member on yachts.

Some of the jobs are full-time and some are part-time, sometimes involving just a few hours a week, allowing each skipper to work as much as they wish. The right way to establish yourself in the field is to gain experience in small jobs, accumulate hours of experience, and gradually try to reach the right people who can help you go far. The path to the first job could start through the sailing school where you studied, friends who studied with you in the course, or even through Facebook groups or online.
