Second-hand boats – Is this a wise investment?

The yacht market is flooded with many different sailing vessels for sale. Aqua Marina’s offerings include various models and sizes of yachts and sailing boats at different price levels. A person interested in buying a yacht needs to initially decide which yacht suits them, what size it should be, its level of equipment, and the budget they have allocated for this purpose.

Is buying second-hand boats a wise investment?

Purchasing any second-hand product has potential but also risks; you can inspect the product thoroughly and everything may seem in order, and then a week later a malfunction might be discovered. It should be taken into account that a product that has already been used could function for many more years without issues, but it could also break down and require repairs that could be expensive. When buying second-hand boats, you are taking a risk and must be aware of the possibility of additional, unforeseen costs.

When buying new yachts, there is a warranty period, and in most cases, the boats do not have faults, especially not significant ones such as an engine that stops working, the repair of which would be particularly costly.

When buying a second-hand yacht, it is advisable to weigh the cost of the yacht and related expenses such as its transfer from the home port in Europe or another destination to Israel and only then decide whether to invest in purchasing this yacht or rather spend a higher amount to buy a new yacht to avoid unexpected faults that could significantly increase the overall purchase cost.

What inspections should be performed on second-hand boats before purchase?

The most important points to check before purchasing are the type of ship, its size, which shipyard it is associated with, who the designer is, and its sailing history.

In addition, it is necessary to review the information about the configuration of the vessel, the skipper’s station, how many cabins there are, what furniture it contains, equipment and kitchen contents, and any other detail listed in the boat’s specifications.

For a thorough and professional inspection, it is advisable to use the services of a marine engineer who will review the vessel in all its aspects, including water pumps, electrical devices, cracks, holes, or places where there is water infiltration. After the comprehensive inspection, the engineer will provide the potential buyer with a detailed opinion based on which they can make an informed decision.
